Our Western Newfoundland summer odyssey takes us to a magnificent part of the province. We'll start in Gros Morne National Park, recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional beauty and unique geological features.
On the seemingly barren lands of the Great Northern Peninsula, we'll find stunted balsam and white birch trees thriving in spite of the wind, and alpine flowers and orchids blooming in the rocky soil. At the tidal flats and marshes of St. Paul's Bay, a large number and variety of birds and seals feed at low tide. Along the way, we'll listen for woodpeckers and warblers in the boreal forests and watch whimbrels that are already migrating south along the sandy shores.
We'll cross the Strait of Belle Isle to Labrador, watching for northern fulmar and shearwaters, as well as several species of whales. During the late spring and early summer, icebergs and floes drift southwards along this part of the coast. We'll visit an old Basque whaling station and the Interpretive Centre in Red Bay.
A highlight of our tour will be a visit to the World Heritage Site of L'Anse aux Meadows, where the Vikings established the first European settlement in North America about 1000 years ago. |

Our participants say...
The trip to Newfoundland and Labrador was terrific. This being my sixth trip with Quest I more or less know what to expect. Nature is always the highlight for me and we got to see some birds, lots of wildflowers and orchids, moose (one up close and personal) and whales (not up close and personal, unfortunately). The non-nature highlight (I'm sure others on the trip will say the same) was Louise at the fishing exhibit who gave us her life story which was amazing and was made doubly so by hearing it with her Newfoundland accent. The picnic lunches were fun and our leader, Dave, was excellent - very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, easy-going and flexible when necessary. The driver of the van was great. All in all the trip was very enjoyable.
